How do I get started in Animal-Assisted Therapy?
To become trained and registered, there are four simple steps:
Step 1: Take the Online Handler Training Course available from PetPartners.org. This can be done at home at your convenience.
Then begin your registration with Pet Partners on their website.
Attend a Utah Pet Partners Fur-Real Hands-On Handlers Practicum. View our Calendar or see the Events tab for the next course date and a downloadable registration form. After you have taken a practicum, you can become member of Utah Pet Partners and begin serving as an Unleashed Volunteer. This will help you learn more about the possibilities in animal-assisted activities and therapy and where will be your “best fit.”
Step 3: Team Evaluation: When you feel that you and your animal are ready, check the website Calendar again to find a date and time that is convenient for you. Click on it to see if there are openings. Contact evaluations@utahpetpartners to schedule your evaluation. Then go to your page on the Pet Partners website, start your registration for you and your animal, go to the evaluation page, click the evaluation date you have arranged, and sign up there. This will enable us to report your results online and speed up your registration.
Step 4: Schedule a Health Screening for your pet with your animal’s veterinarian. You can download the form from your Pet Partners page.
Step 5: Download your completed evaluation forms and complete your registration through the Pet Partners website. They will need your team evaluation score sheets, health certification by your regular veterinarian, a photo for your ID badge, membership fee and other information forms. You will receive a substantial discount with Pet Partners for your membership with Utah Pet Partners.
You can start participating in Animal-Assisted Therapy or Activities after becoming a registered Pet Partner team. If you are a member of Utah Pet Partners, we offer site assessments, mentoring, and local support. We will work with you to find the most ideal volunteer opportunity for you and your animal and will help you learn the best techniques for that opportunity. Please forward your Pet Partners acceptance letter to the executive director.
